Food
What you put on the end of your fork seriously matters. It is more powerful than anything you will find in a prescription bottle (and comes with a lower cost and no negative side-effects). Everyone knows that "eating healthy" is good for them, but most don't realize food's true medicinal power to prevent, treat and even reverse disease.
There is no one “right way” for everyone to eat. We are all individuals and our bodies are going to react differently to what we eat, bottom line. While you will be given parameters and guidelines about what constitutes healthy eating, what works for me may not work for you (physically or philosophically). We can work within your framework.
We all have to pay attention to how foods make us feel. If a certain food makes you feel ill, it is not for you. You are the expert on what you eat. The right foods for you should make you feel energized and satisfied, not sick and tired. You may have to relearn the skill of tuning in to your body. It may take some time and require a few reminders to stay tuned-in but that’s OK!
Knowledge is power and what you don’t know about food absolutely can hurt you. We live in a very toxic environment. What worked for our grandparents is now largely obsolete. If you arm yourself with the right information you can make good choices for the rest of your life without it being too complicated.
Feed your body, not just your hunger. Calorie-counting is a waste of time! Here's why: compare the calories in an avocado to the calories in a candy bar. The candy bar calories will definitely not feed your body in the same way as the avocado! Even though either may quell your hunger, at least temporarily, one of those choices will eventually make you fat and sick. By choosing foods based on how well they will serve your body, calories don’t end up sitting on your waistline, even when you haven’t counted a thing.
Processed foods can harm you. Food in its whole form is always the healthiest version. If most of your food comes in a package, with ingredient lists that include unidentifiable objects, it is well and truly time to rethink your diet.
Pay now or pay later (with your health). The main point of choosing organic food is avoidance. The toxins found in conventionally grown and processed foods such as synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, herbicides, irradiation, sewage sludge and genetic engineering will eventually make you sick. There are some foods that are worse than others but, in general, strive to get organic whenever you can. Some foods you eat should really only be organic while with some others it’s not as important. Get familiar with the “clean 15 and dirty dozen” food list from the Environmental Working Group. They update it every year. Good, healthy food could be the most important investment you make in yourself and your future.
A healthy diet gives you more options, not fewer. Looking at food in a new way will open doors, not close them. The possibilities are endless and, once you are eating in a way that makes you feel better and restores your health you will never want to go back!
